The natural gas extracted from the ground is named as “feed” gas. Methane is by far the major component, usually over 85% by volume, but it can include such gases as ethane, propane, butane, pentanes, hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, helium and nitrogen. The initial gas processing removes most of the impurities and water, before sending for further treatment. Presence of various combustible gases in a “feed” gas requires flexibility in selection of sensing technologies for their monitoring.

There are several leading causes of accidents during gas extraction which include explosions and fires from combustible gases. Preventing extraction field fires and explosions is a complex issue, due to the many flammable materials involved and harsh conditions they occur. The natural gas is sent to a treatment & liquefaction plant, where additional gas processing removes the rest of the water vapour and other impurities such as mercury, sulphur compounds or carbon dioxide from the gas. So-called “train” installations are used to treat and later liquefy natural gas at the facility. Extreme operating conditions causes thermal expansion of liquefaction installation including compressor, pump or hydraulic turbine, being potential source of leaks.

A refrigeration process turns the gas into a liquid. LNG is predominantly methane, with small amounts of ethane, propane and butane. To obtain maximum volume reduction, the gas is liquefied through the relevant refrigeration technology which makes it possible to cool the gas down to approximately -162 °C when it becomes a liquid. Therefore, export terminals are designed with multiple layers of protection and must meet rigorous safety regulations. They are specifically equipped with fire protection and multiple gas detection systems.

LNG Carriers have design features aimed at a high degree of safety, including double-hulled design and ballast tanks separated from the cargo tanks with thick insulation. Distribution of the natural gas to consumers via pipeline is the norm; alternatively, LNG can be transported to customers in specially-designed bunker vessel/barge, road tank trucks and rail tank cars. Compared to liquid fuel, LNG solutions provide lower CO2, NOx and SOx emissions. LNG comes forward as an excellent, greener alternative. The regasification facility depending on requirements can be an onshore LNG terminal or an offshore Floating Storage and Regasification. The traditional approach was to build an onshore terminal to cool down the LNG and supply local gas systems. Offshore FSRU technology has become a fast growing alternative and if storage is not required Floating Regasification units are used. Fire and explosion hazards during regasification may result from the presence of leaking combustible natural gas.

The LNG regasification process system is similar for available configurations, including plants which receive LNG as fueling option. The LNG will be pumped from storage, delivered to the vaporization facility at the desired gas delivery pressure, and vaporized using an external heat source. These operations involve transfer of LNG through various equipment before it reaches gaseous state. Such locations are monitored by combustible gas leak detectors.
